Ole Miss won the Governor's Cup, beating Mississippi State for their mid-week game, signifying little brother status for the Bulldogs.
As an Ole Miss student being raised in Mississippi, I have a deep disdain for Mississippi State that has always been with me. This game had me on the edge of my seat for the entirety of it – until the rain delay.
There was also the fact that all but one of the Ole Miss batters got a hit against the Bulldogs, with Campbell Smithwick being the lone hitless Rebel for the day. The only part of the game that kind of sucked, for me at least, was the weather delay. It just sort of took me out of the game for a second, and I had to find something else to do.
Will Furness continued to be an outstanding player for Ole Miss, hitting a walkoff blooper into the outfield during the bottom of the tenth. He also had a home run in this game, an overall outstanding day for the freshman sensation.
Austin Fawley also had a homerun for the Rebels, his lone hit of the game. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention Hudson Calhoun, who clutched the game for the Rebels.
The best feeling in the world is beating an in-state rival in any sport, and Ole Miss did that. The team now looks forward as they host a really good Vanderbilt team. Lord help the parking in Oxford, as there are about 20 different things going on this weekend.
