Last-Second Goal Sinks Vanderbilt Lacrosse in Thriller at East Carolina
In a dramatic finish, Vanderbilt's women's lacrosse team fell 14-13 to East Carolina on Saturday, April 12, 2025, in Greenville, North Carolina. The Commodores (6-8, 2-3 AAC) overcame a 10-6 halftime deficit, holding the Pirates scoreless in the third quarter and taking a 13-11 lead with four minutes remaining, thanks to Nancy Halleron's second goal of the game.
However, East Carolina (5-8, 3-1 AAC) mounted a late comeback. Senior Erin Gulden tied the game with 26.7 seconds left, completing her hat trick. After winning the ensuing draw control, the Pirates capitalized on their final possession. Leah Bestany, who led ECU with four goals and two assists, found Riley Matthiesen, who scored the game-winner with just 1.9 seconds remaining.
Despite the loss, Vanderbilt dominated draw controls 18-12 and matched ECU in ground balls with 18. The Commodores will look to rebound on Wednesday, April 16, when they host Lindenwood at noon, with the game streamed on ESPN+.
