OXFORD, Miss. — No. 16 Vanderbilt women’s tennis continued its strong SEC campaign on Sunday, securing a 5-2 road win over No. 34 Ole Miss behind a dominant performance from senior Célia-Belle Mohr. The Dores showcased their resilience in key moments, winning the doubles point and closing out critical singles matches to extend their winning streak to three.
“It was a really quality win on the road; Ole Miss is a very good team,” said head coach Aleke Tsoubanos. “I think we were tough in the critical moments of singles play to pull away on Courts 1, 3, and 5 in those first sets, which all started out quite close.”
Strong Start in Doubles
Vanderbilt set the tone early in doubles action. The duo of sophomore Valeria Ray and junior Bridget Stammel controlled play at the No. 2 spot, earning a 6-3 win over Andrea Nova and Brooklyn Olson. Meanwhile, Mohr and freshman Sophia Webster found themselves in an early hole at No. 1 doubles, falling behind 3-0. However, the No. 14-ranked pair mounted an impressive comeback, winning six of the next seven games to clinch the doubles point with a 6-4 victory. With that win, Vanderbilt improved to an impressive 15-4 in dual match doubles play this season.
Taking Control in Singles
The Commodores carried their momentum into singles play, securing four first-set victories across six courts. Webster struck first for Vanderbilt, breezing past Rachel Krzyak 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 5 position to claim her third consecutive singles win. Mohr followed suit, delivering a commanding 6-2, 6-1 victory over Emily Welker at No. 1 singles, snapping her three-match skid and improving her overall record to 16-6 on the season.
With Vanderbilt up 3-0, Stammel sealed the victory with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles, ensuring the Dores’ fourth straight win over Ole Miss. Senior Amy Stevens capped off the team’s dominant day with a second-set shutout at No. 6 singles, defeating Emma Kette 7-6 (7-5), 6-0.
“Sophia, Bridget, and Célia did a fantastic job of not allowing their opponents much of a seam to get back into the matches,” said Tsoubanos. “It was a great effort to close those out in straight sets. And I think Amy getting her first-set tiebreaker was great for our momentum. I’m proud of the fight from Valeria and Trinetra battling back to get their second sets and force some 10-point breakers.”
Dores Keep Rolling
Vanderbilt has now won four straight meetings against Ole Miss and improves to 7-1 against teams ranked outside the ITA Top 25. The win pushes the Dores to 15-4 overall and 8-3 in SEC play, keeping them firmly in the mix for a strong postseason position.
Next up, Vanderbilt faces its toughest challenge yet—an SEC showdown with No. 1 Georgia (18-1, 11-0 SEC) on Friday. Fans can follow along for updates and exclusive content on @VandyWTennis on Instagram and X.
