Tennessee and Kentucky have separated themselves as the best two teams in the SEC.
These two are setting themselves up to be on a collision course for the SEC Championship. Both teams have all the pieces to cut the nets down in March.
Kentucky had an impressive comeback win in Gainesville, as Reed Sheppard keeps making big plays for the Wildcats. Sheppard makes winning plays and the offense is played at a different pace when he is in the game. Did I also mention he leads Kentucky in plus minus.
Aaron Bradshaw was huge in today’s game as he hit the go ahead three with less than two minutes to play. Bradshaw is an elite prospect and has a chance to be a special player. Tre Mitchell also is playing the best basketball of his college career as he gives the wildcats a legitimate scorer inside. John Calipari isolated Mitchell on the block multiple times when Kentucky needed a bucket and he delivered.
Antonio Reeves continues to play great basketball for the Wildcats. His pace and confidence within the offense is night and day from last year. This win should give the young Wildcats a lot of confidence moving forward.
Tennessee had an impressive win, as they crushed Ole Miss and give the Rebels their first loss of the season.
Zakai Ziegler had a double double and he looks like the Zakai Ziegler before the ACL injury. Jonas Aidoo had his best game as a Vol. Rick Barnes has been very vocal about how good Aidoo can be. If Aidoo can emerge as a inside threat, this will make the Vols that much better.
The Vols did all this with Superstar Dalton Knecht only scoring 8 points. Josiah Jordan- James is finally healthy and playing his best basketball. He will be the X-Factor for the Vols, as he is their glue guy. He is in a perfect position to succeed. He isn’t on the top of the scouting report which makes him dangerous. He has developed a nice turn around pull jumper to go along with his three point ball.
Jahmi Mashack might be my favorite player on this team as he does all the little things to win. He is an elite perimeter defender and has developed nicely on the offensive side of the ball. Lookout if the Vols find consistent scoring, this team could win the National Championship.
The most impressive win of the day was from the Auburn Tigers, as they took Arkansas to the woodshed in Bud Walton arena. Teams do not go into Bud Walton and win much less blowout the Razorbacks.
Auburn was able to get 46 points from the bench and star Johni Broome had 14 points and 8 rebounds. Before this game I thought the Tigers were underrated, they will not be anymore. This team is taking good shots and playing under control on the offensive side of the court. These two things have been a problem for the Tigers in years past.
But the defense of the Tigers is on another level right now. They guard the ball better than anyone in the league, this prevents the Tigers from rotations. If as a team you do not have to scramble and rotate it makes your defense that much better.
There is trouble in College Station, as the Aggies lost to LSU over the weekend. Buzz Williams' squad was thought to be SEC contenders, but you can’t lose home games to LSU if you want to contend.
The Aggies rely too much on guard Wade Baldwin, as they desperately need Tyrese Radford to regain form. South Carolina had a huge win over Mississippi State, as the Gamecocks are a nice surprise in the SEC. They have positioned themselves to have a chance at the Tournament.
Alabama went to Vandy and picked up a big win against the Commodores. I still think that Alabama has the talent to contend in the SEC.
It always means more in the SEC and lookout this could be the deepest conference in the League. I believe there could be around 8-10 teams that make the NCAA tournament.
There’s never a night off in the SEC as we enter week two of conference play.
There aren’t any ranked matchups this week but I will go with Auburn at home against Texas A&M as the game of the week.
A&M is looking to bounce back after a bad loss at home and Auburn is looking to stay hot early in conference play. If the Aggies can give Wade Baldwin some help they can keep this one close.
We will find out how good South Carolina is as they travel to Alabama. Very interesting game and Alabama has as much talent as anyone in the country. Meechie Johnson looks to continue his fine play for the Gamecocks.
As a Vol fan, I always worry about going to Mississippi State. The Bulldogs are coming off a loss and will be desperate for a win.
Tolu Smith is back for the Bulldogs after an injury. The Vols will need to put this game away and not let the Bulldogs keep it close.
One thing to look for is the play of Dalton Knecht, as he has really struggled as of late.
Kentucky looks to go to 2-0 as they have Missouri in Rupp. Great teams do not play down to their competition and this will be a good test to see how a young team responds after a big win in Gainesville.
Florida travels to Ole Miss in what I think is an intriguing game as neither team wants to drop to 0-2. Florida fell late, but looked very good. Todd Golden is a bright young coach and runs really good stuff.
Ole Miss looks to quiet to noise of them being overrated. I am just not a believer in the Rebels after seeing them in person on Saturday in Knoxville.
