As kickoff for the 2024 season is quickly approaching, the Gamecocks, like many other programs, are still trying to get every position figured out. Offensively, the Gamecocks will be looking to a lot of new faces to step up and lead the way for them next season. Players such as LaNorris Sellers, Nyck Harbor and Rocket Sanders are all expected to shoulder the majority of the offensive production while others, including Oscar Adaway, Jared Brown, and Joshua Simon will play key parts as well. Is there a player on the roster who is currently flying under the radar who is primed to break out for the Gamecocks on offense next season?
Most positions on offense for South Carolina are marked with uncertainty. This has been discussed extensively. That said, while youth and inexperience define most offensive units, there are leaders who will be called upon to anchor their respective position.
Specific to the wide receiver group, Harbor looks to be the leader of this unit. As we all know, though, this is the most “wide open” position on offense with most good offensive attacks featuring 2-3 talented receivers.
Outside of Harbor, guys like Jared Brown, Gage Larvadain, Dalvon Campbell, and Ahmari Huggins-Bruce have all been discussed as likely key contributors. I think this is due to their experience as well as physical attributes that should excite fans.
If there is a player who is currently flying under the radar who just might break out and contribute in a significant way for this offense next year, I think it is Tyshawn Russell.
By breakout, I do not mean a player who emerges onto the scene as the #1 or even #2 WR for the team. I simply mean a player who steps into a vital role despite not having high expectations..
Russell put up pedestrian numbers last season going for 5 receptions, 81 yards, and 1 TD in limited action.
However, I think he has good chemistry with starting QB, LaNorris Sellers, evidenced by their 50 yard connection against Furman.
The sample size is small, but the quickness he possesses should allow him to pose as both a deep threat as well as a receiver who can create separation in the short to intermediate field.
Combine these physical tools with the trust he has from Sellers, and big things could be in store for Russell next season.
