Was South Carolina Baseball's Series Sweep Over Vanderbilt A FLUKE Or A TURNING POINT For The Gamecocks?

South Carolina swept Vanderbilt in their series 3-0 and this was the first time this season South Carolina baseball won a series vs a Top 5 ranked team. The Gamecocks won both games in their double header on Saturday 8-4 and 8-3 and then they won convincingly on Sunday 10-2.

This is huge for South Carolina because they have had an up-and-down year early on. They have been inconsistent with series losses to Clemson and Ole Miss the Gamecocks needed a big series win and they got it with the sweep. The Gamecocks had high expectations coming into the season with a lot of people believing this would be a top-10-ranked team.

I do have one concern Vanderbilt had a lot of errors that resulted in hits and runs for the Gamecocks. There were multiple times during this series where Vanderbilt should have had an easy out but they dropped fly balls, missed throws, and mishandled ground balls.

Does this series win propel the Gamecocks to continue to win or was there just a bad weekend for the Commodores?

The Gamecocks hit the ball well over these 3 games with home runs from Ethan Petry, Cole Messina, Kennedy Jones, Gavin Casas, and Tyler Causey. The Gamecocks have to get more consistency with the bats. The Gamecocks also had great pitching throughout the series and especially on Sunday with freshman pitcher Tyler Pitzer having 9 strikeouts.

The Gamecocks are a streaky team when they are hot they can compete with anyone but at the same time, they can also lose to teams that they should win against. The Gamecock's next series is at Alabama in Tuscaloosa, this will be a test to see if the Gamecocks are making a turning point in the season or if they just had a good weekend vs a team that made a lot of mistakes.

This team is very talented so they are expected to win games and if not there could be some heat on head coach Mark Kingston.
