Opening weekend of college baseball is complete and for the Texas Longhorns, it was a solid showing at Globe Life Field in Arlington. The Horns would finish 2-1 in the Shriner Children’s College Showdown with blowout wins over Ole Miss and #17 Oklahoma State after dropping the opener to Louisville in extra innings on Friday night. Sit back, relax and have a 12 pack with me!
- We knew this Texas team would be hitters. The Longhorns flexed some serious muscle in Arlington, racking up 6 HRs, 8 doubles and a triple over the weekend.
- Pitching was a big question mark for the Longhorns headed into the season. It’s early but the Friday and Saturday starters were outstanding and Texas got some good innings from relievers as well.
- The “Race to 50” is on for the Texas outfielders. Only 46 more knocks to go!
- Adrian Rodriquez is a star in the making. He struggled early but finished the weekend with a .429 batting average, 2 HRs, 3doubles and 3 RBI.
- As good as they were at the plate over the weekend, Texas hitters struck out 40times. That’s over 13 Ks per game and that is way too many.
- Texas quietly swiped 5 bags over the weekend and that was without the speedy Easton Winfield on the bases.
- Not one bunt. When is the last time you watched Texas play 3 games and not attempt a single bunt?
- Texas stranded almost 9 baserunners per game over the weekend.
- Shriners Children’s College Showdown Champions has a nice ring to it.
- I’m not ready to call them a contender but this team looked better this weekend than I expected them to look.
- Under the radar pitcher to watch as the season goes on? Junior Grayson Saunier. Nice run on the fastball and a nice breaking ball he can locate.
- Curses turn into winning streaks in the blink of an eye. Nice try Globe Life!
