Texas sweeps Santa Clara over the weekend to push their winning streak to 13 and notch their 2nd weekend series sweep of the 2025 season. The Longhorns will host UT Arlington on Tuesday night before taking to the road to face the #22 Mississippi State Bulldogs in their first SEC baseball series. But for now, have a seat and share a 12 pack with me.

  • Pitching! it was damn good over the weekend. With Freshman Dylan Volantis making his first Sunday start of the season, the Longhorns have a starting battery with a combined 1.04 ERA heading into SEC play.
  • Jalin Flores has arrived! Flores backed up his Las Vegas College Baseball Classic tournament MVP performance hitting .385 for 5 RBI, with 4 Doubles and 1 HR against the Broncos.
  • Easton Winfield is on the shortest leash I've ever seen. He's gotten 3 ABs in his last 2 starts and was quickly replaced by Tommy Farmer in both. He got lifted from the midweek against Texas A&M CC after getting a base hit. Not after the inning was over. Immediately after the hit!
  • Tommy Farmer, conversely, is on a tear, going 5-9 (.555) this week with 5 RBI, a double and 2 stolen bases. 3 by my count. He got "caught stealing" on a base he stole so good he slid through the bag and was tagged after reaching safely. Technicalities.
  • This Texas team is dangerous offensively because someone is always hitting. Preseason All American Max Belyeu went 1 for 10 on the weekend. HR leader Will Gasparino went 2 for 7 with nary a long ball. Doesn't matter, still swept.
  • "Grubbs'n" will soon become a verb if Max Grubbs keeps scattering 3 hits over 4 innings and striking out 4 out of the bullpen.
  • Love this offense so far except for one thing. Pitchers that are confident enough and good enough to locate their off speed stuff for strikes early in the count can feast on this lineup with trash in the dirt. At least that was the case this weekend. 25 Ks for Texas hitters over the weekend and most of those were swings and misses at breaking pitches in the dirt. HUNT FASTBALLS! HAVE AN APPROACH! All those dad sayings.
  • The first pitch ball reared it's ugly head on Saturday. As good as this starting unit is, there is still a level on inconsistency that will have to improve or those gaudy ERA numbers won't last for long.
  • The double play is back for Texas baseball. I can remember when Texas would lead college baseball in double plays. Then it seemed like they were stricken from the game altogether. Texas had 5 on Saturday and Sunday. Good stuff.
  • Speaking of defense, not a single error for the Longhorns over the weekend. That's huge considering their shaky start and a road trip to Starkville coming up.
  • 2 out hitting can be a back breaker for opposing teams. 9 of Texas' 18 runs this weekend came with 2 outs. 2 OUT RALLY!
  • it's been a really good start for the #12 Texas Longhorns but we haven't seen the best of this team yet.

Join me after every weekend series the rest of the season for a 12 Pack!
