When Donovan McNabb was drafted in 1999, questions surrounded him all going into his rookie year, he was an option quarterback and was not the most well received according to the Philadelphia Eagles fan base.
Well, he turned out to be a pretty good quarterback, leading Philadelphia to 5 straight NFC championship games and a Super Bowl berth in the 2004 season. His mechanics were incredible, his ability to scramble and make plays even with protection breaking down around him paved the way for quarterbacks like Russell Wilson and Patrick Mahomes to use his techniques in their play.
Why do I say all this? Well… I’m here to tell you that the next Donovan McNabb is in Tuscaloosa, Alabama in Jalen Milroe.
When you look at Jalen and Donovan side by side, McNabb has the size advantage, he’s about 15 pounds bigger than him and he has an inch on Jalen, but they both have a lot in common. Their ability to scramble and make plays outside the pocket is fantastic, their football IQs are through the roof.
When you look at how Jalen Milroe throws the football, he can certainly launch it, he may not have as quick of a release as McNabb but both share the same technique when releasing the football. You may say to me, “Well Lucas. Why is he not compared to Lamar Jackson in your eyes.” Well it is actually two simple words that come to mind. Kalen. DeBoer.
DeBoer is going to be insanely significant in Milroe’s passing game, he’ll still be a guy that will scramble to make plays. But it’s going to be twice as nice with DeBoer on the sidelines and a coaching staff that may be getting to witness the best quarterback ,sorry not sorry Michael Penix Jr. fans, in their coaching careers.
Milroe is going to take the next step into becoming an all time great at Alabama, and to me, a franchise cornerstone that Donovan McNabb was for the Philadelphia Eagles organization.
