Transferring from an FCS school to a big power five school can be a bit of an adjustment for some athletes.

First you have to deal with the size of the school, the fanbase is a lot more high on you and expects you to perform against the best of the best, especially in the SEC. There are guys who perform at a high level coming from FCS schools like Travis Hunter, Shedeur Sanders, Juice Wells, and Jared Verse.

But what about guys going from the FCS to the SEC? Juice Wells is one of the few on the list of guys I mentioned that really made an impact on the offensive side of the ball in the SEC. How about the defensive side of the ball? It seems like fans and the media alike don’t seem to notice the defensive side of the ball, maybe not from LSU last year for sure.

That being said, you better watch out for Zy Alexander next year. I got a front row seat to Alexander while he was at Southeastern Louisiana in 2021 and 2022, there’s a reason why he was a two-time All-Southland in a conference that has been well known for high-flying offenses like Southeastern, UIW, Nicholls, and even McNeese State.

His technique and development into a fundamental defensive back has been fun to watch, he’s had to grow up and be the leader, even being the bright spot a few times in a bad year for LSU’s defense. It wasn’t easy for him, especially through the first five games, but the last three games of the season before he got hurt vs Army, he showed the world why he was highly sought after coming from Hammond, Louisiana.

He got better as the season progressed, but there’s no team in the SEC under more stress, especially on the defensive side of the ball, than LSU right now. After back to back 10 win seasons for Brian Kelly and company, this year has to be an improvement on the defensive side of the ball.

A blown opportunity to win a national championship because of arguably the worst defense in LSU history, this year is definitely going to be a difficult one for Brian Kelly and the LSU faithful, maybe even leading to only an 8 or 9 win season. But one thing is for sure, this defense will get better, there is no question about it.

LSU may have some big time guys like Jardin Gilbert, Jyaire Brown, and Austin Ausberry, but a bigger transfer is going to turn heads this year, make no mistake about it, when you turn on the film, there will be no better defensive back than Zy Alexander, a man that, when healthy, has the opportunity to develop into the one of the best defensive backs in the SEC, who can change the outcome of the game at any point if a ball is thrown his way, if any quarterback even thinks about it.

Alexander’s football IQ is unbelievable, his ability to track down the football is extremely well, his footwork is fantastic, his coverage doesn’t break down, you won’t see him lose one-on-one battles often, and he’ll continue to showcase his unbelievable ability with Blake Baker at the helm in Baton Rouge.
