Talent has not been a question at cornerback for Kalen DeBoer and the Alabama Crimson Tide football team.
Entering Wednesday, four out of the five that were on the roster were five-star prospects coming out of high school, with the other being a top-50 caliber player in Jahlil Hurley. The problem is in the experience department. Outside of Domani Jackson who had started 11 games for USC over the past two seasons, there has not been a single college snap played by any other player at the position.
That is why adding Wake Forest transfer DaShawn Jones filled a significant void.
Over the past two seasons for the Demon Deacons, Jones has started a total of 11 games. 10 of those starts came in 2023 where he totaled 37 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, a team-leading three interceptions and two pass breakups.
Let's talk about what the addition of Jones actually means and it shouldn't be understated or overstated. Jones is a good player who fills a position of need. It's likely that Jackson will lock down one side of the field leaving the other side open for competition.
In the spring, freshman five-star Zabien Brown occupied that spot, but is he truly ready to face SEC wide receivers? That's what makes the addition of Jones so meaningful. Now, Brown and other freshmen like Zay Mincey and Jaylen Mbakwe don't have to be thrown into the fire right away.
The way I see it, a couple of things could happen. Either Jones proves to be the clear cut starter, or he can hold down the forte long enough until one of these incredible gifted freshmen are ready to get on the field. In the end, it's a win-win for Coach DeBoer and the Tide.
Adding Jones may not have broke the internet, but it did fill a need for the Tide.
